Weitere Informationen zum Oktoberfest auf der Theresienwiese:

This was held on 17th October 1810 on a meadow, which was then still outside the city center of Munich. Occasion of the first Oktoberfest was the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese, who was celebrated then within the frame of a great horse race. To honor his newly wedded wife Crown Prince Ludwig named the site of the event Theresienwiese, it still carries this name today.

Since the first Oktoberfest in 1810, this festival has taken place every year. However, it has been canceled several times, eg. as a result of wars or of two cholera epidemics that raged in the years 1854 and 1873. End of the 19th Century one began to extend the Oktoberfest successively, and finally it was moved up so that since that time it has started in September and only the last weekend traditionally remains in October.

In the 20's of the last century, the Munich Oktoberfest finally developed into what it is today: one of the largest festivals in the world. The sporting activities - such as the traditional horse racing - have been abandoned completely, so the Oktoberfest now exclusively owns the character of a folk festival. In this context also the ritual to open each Oktoberfest with the broaching of a cask by the incumbent mayor of Munich was introduced.

For 200 years, this event carries the name Oktoberfest. However the citizens of Munich hardly ever use this name, for them every year in September, just d'Wiesn (based on the venue) takes place.

For many years a special Oktoberfest beer has been made by various Munich breweries. It is called "Oktoberfest Märzen" and has a very high alcohol content of about 6 to 7%. Traditionally, this beer is served in beer mugs called Maß, with a capacity of one liter. In the Bavarian language you don't drink beer on the Oktoberfest but a Maß. On the festival there are six different Munich breweries represented, which provide the beer and run the marquees.

Indisputably the oldest of these attractions is the Ferris wheel, which is to marvel at every year at the Oktoberfest. With a ride in this monster of steel, the visitor gets a very nice overview of the whole Oktoberfest grounds. Since 1880 there is a Ferris wheel at the Oktoberfest, but it was step-by-step  replaced by bigger and bigger models. The first Ferris wheel measured while only 12 meters, now it has already reached 48 meters in diameter, and for the future a even bigger Ferris wheel is expected at the Oktoberfest.

The most important thing at the Oktoberfest is the beer. Therefore, since 1887 the Oktoberfest traditionally starts with the Parade of Oktoberfest Landlords. The procession is led by the Münchner Kindl, the representative of the city at many cultural events - in particular, of course, to the Oktoberfest in Munich. It traditionally followed by the carriage of the Mayor. Date: Saturday, 22 September 2012 Start: 11:00 o'clock, Location: Munich city center

If you would like to reserve the respective Oktoberfest landlord should be contacted directly at an early stage. A central booking office does not exist. Common are reservations for groups of minimum of ten persons, with beer-and chicken- tokens to be paid in advance, which will be redeemed in the marquees.
